"Cold Sassy Tree"
The novel “Cold Sassy Tree” by Olive Ann Burns, depicts a small southern town at the turn of the twentieth century. In the town of Cold Sassy if someone’s petticoat showed the ladies could make it the talk of the town for an entire week. You can imagine how Cold Sassy reacted when E. Rucker Blakeslee, 59, married Ms. Love Simpson, barely 34, with his first wife still warm in her grave! It was one of the biggest scandals the town had ever seen, and the ladies were relentless! A major theme in “Cold Sassy Tree” is that people’s opinions of you are directly affected by your actions. Even if the judgement passed is incorrect! Mr. Blakeslee was the first to feel the wrath of the gossiping ladies. He was devastated after the death of Miss Mattie Lou, his wife of thirty-six years.
