Student-athletes and students that participate in extracurricular activities should have to follow the same regulations. Just because a student plays either a varsity or junior varsity sport does not make him or her any more important or special than any other student in the school. The members of other extracurricular activities, besides sports, should have to all sign the same paperwork to participate in whatever they are doing. In many high schools across the country, student-athletes are required to sign a contract saying that they will not use drugs, tobacco, or alcohol while in season. This contract also entitles the school to perform random drug tests on their athletes. To participate in the season, an athlete must sign this contract. Without signing, the athlete will not be able to play in contests or even practice. The Gettysburg High School drug and alcohol contract warns that if a student-athlete is tested and found to have been using drugs or alcohol, he or she is suspended from all forms of participation for one week upon the first offense. Upon the second offense, the athlete will be suspended from all athletics within the school for one year to the day. If a third offense then occurs, the athlete is banned from participation in all sporting events for the remainder of their high school career.
