Harriet Tubman: The moses of her people Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland, USA but the date was never exactly recorded. She was born a slave but, due to her rebellious nature, was always running away as a child. Throughout her early teens she was ordered to help the farm by working in the fields. One day, a young black slave went to a store without permission of his master and was supposed to get the whip. Harriet was ordered to tie the poor boy up so the master could whip him, but she refused to and so the young boy ran away. The consequences of her actions were something that affected her for the rest of her life. She was hit with a heavy iron weight and was knocked unconscious. From then on, she would unknowingly fall asleep for a short period of time with no knowledge of what happened. It is mentioned that it could also be a seizure. Harriet then married Mr. Tubman at 24 years old and told him of her dreams to escape but he said that he wanted to stay in the south. The farm was sold and she received the news that her and her two brothers were to be sold. She knew her only chance of escape was to leave without anyone, including her own mother, to leave.
