Well, what are you waiting for? 1800 - On August 30, 1800, a plan to liberate a group of slaves was taking place in Richmond, Virginia. The slave who organized the revolt was Gabriel Prosser. He wanted to see Virginia a state for free blacks. The action never took place, but Prosser became well known because he had organized a few thousand slaves. The plan was to attack the state capital at Richmond. After capturing the armories where weapons were stored, they would kill the whites. They would then use the firearms they had taken to attack other towns throughout the state and free slaves as they went. Prosser and most of those that had been in his group were hanged or shot. 1800 - Black rebels demanded that black judges be appointed to sit on cases involving them. The demand was denied, and within a week all of those were involved were captured and eventually were executed. 1807 - In 1807 slave trade was banned by the British Parliament. No more slave ships would carry the British flag. 1808 - In 1808, Congress passed laws prohibiting the continued importation of Africans as slaved. For the most part, the laws are ignored, and slave ships continue to arrive in the South. 1811 - Paul Cuffe was a part black, part Indian who lived in Massachussetts. In 1810 he sailed to Sierra Leone, Africa. He believed that the blacks should be allowed to set up a free colony there. Cuffe paid for a contingent of free blacks to sail to Sierra Leone. Cuffe believed that the black man was entitled to the vote, and his constant work on that issue resulted in blacks in Massachusetts being given that right.
