Edward Scissorhands Introduction The film was made in 1990 and was directed by Tim Burton. The film starts off with a friendly lady selling cosmetics (Avon lady). She goes to Edwards home and finds him hiding and alone, so she takes him back to her house and cares for him. This causes the neighborhood a lot of fuss and they all take an interest in Edward because of his hands. Everyone in the area likes Edward apart from one woman who believes he is evil. Edward is very happy and is enjoying himself because at first he appears to fit in. He cuts everyone’s hair and even their dogs hair; he also cuts and styles the bushes and trees into shapes and figures. But this doesn’t last and the end of the film chases him back to his castle, which is where he stays and fakes his own death to make the angry mob outside leave him be. The set up (the beginning of the film) In the opening sequence when the credits are on, we see what looks like mechanical figures and machinery, at first we have no idea what these are or represent. In the next scene we come to a humble warm bedroom where an old lady sits putting a young little girl into bed whilst talking to her. At the start of the film we do not know who these two people are. From the first couple of scenes this story reminds us of a kind of fantasy storyline. In the flashbacks we see a small, well looked after, little town. A middle-aged woman appears to be doing a door-to-door sale of cosmetics. The director wants us to assume that the old lady we have just left in the last scene is the middle-aged woman selling the cosmetics. The film was shot in a real community in Lutz, which is in Florida. The pastel painted bungalows have often featured in TV and cinema, all the houses look the same, and the only difference is the colours. When Peggy (the Avon lady) is seeing her customers, we get the first chance to meet the other characters in the film. We come to meet a variety of people such as woman who seems to be chatting up a workman, we also see a teenage girl and a religious fanatic, and these are all minor stereotypes with little cameo roles in the film. The contrast used when Peggy returns to her car is that the uniform rows of small- town suburban homes are compared to the massive Gothic castle on the hill outside of the town. This castle on the hill reminds us of a type of horror film because of it dark gloomy look, and its almost deserted location on top of the hill. When Peggy goes up to the castle she comes across a lovely garden with sculpted hedges and bushes cut to look like figures, this seems out of place in the castle and compared to the town below. At this point of the film we do not understand the significance of this. To put an Avon lady into this fantastic setting seems odd and it makes us more attracted towards the film and makes us want to watch more. When Peggy goes into the house she wonders around looking for someone to greet her but this doesn’t happen so she take a look in the house and she then comes across a massive loft room in the roof of the house, this is where she finds Edward hiding and scared, at first she does not see him until she hears the scratching of his hands, she then calls him to come out and not to be scared but Edward is scared and this surprises us because we would expect Peggy to be more frightened of Edward due to his abnormal look.
