Learning to read Since I was a child I never enjoy reading. I drove my parents crazy. They had tried many things in order to make me appreciate this activity, but nothing worked. My father bought lots of comic books and every night mom used to insist that I should listen to her reading a short story, like Romeo and Juliet. Obviously, I hated it. Then, when I decided to study English systematically I realized that reading in a foreign language would be a hard work for me. How could I understand a text in English if I was not able to do that even in Portuguese, my mother tongue? If I found an unknown word in the middle of the text I stopped it immediately and never more returned the reading. So, my grades at Portuguese and English became the worst at class. I was almost giving up to become a good reader when I went to College to study Liberal Arts.
