Read the novel at least once, preferably twice. The first reading might be fairly 'quick', not too detailed, where you are looking simply to understand the gist of the story: what is this story about? What happens when, and to which characters? Even at this level, though, you might become aware that there are aspects of the content which recur and which therefore acquire emphasis in the plot of the novel. You might also start to feel that the story elements are organised in particular ways. A section in which the main character thinks about a recent experience in his life might be followed, for instance, by a section in which he writes about something that happened a while back and which he now filters through memory.
