Yun Suk Nam
Description of Yun Suk-Nam’s Day and Night Title and contextFormSubject MatterRepresentationalApproachProposed theme Yun Suk-Nam’s installation “Day and Night “ is a mixed media piece. It incorporates family life figures with wooden paintings and plastic dolls to create the mood and atmosphere. Yun lives and creates her bodies of work in Seoul, South Korea.Large life size figures are placed in an open area with few lights, Darkened backdrop. Yun has arranged the figures separately, which creates a large life size scena. Metal, plastic and wood have also been used. The floor and background of the installation are dark and not much light can be seen. A wooden blue chair stands alone under one of the lights also a wooden cut out of an older female that has been painted on the wood and a small plastic child with wooden wings, spread wide open as if it was protecting the mother from harm. To the right there is a large metal figure in the shadows representing a male like figure, broad shoulders and wide body indicating a man.A black hat next to the metal man also is shone upon by light. The figures’ being singled out creates a mood of isolation and alienation. This installation possesses great strength and confidence to create an alienation mood, that something is wrong. The shadowing on the male indicates he is being left out.Yun’s “ Day and Night “ Proposes that the mother of the family receives more of the child’s affection and love then the father. This is very common in many families around the world.
