This introductory essay calls for a group effort between religious organizations and society as a whole to improve, protect, and preserve our environment. The suggestion is to “creatively rethink human-Earth relations and activate informed environmental concern from the varied perspectives of the world’s religions” (2). The environmental crisis is a global and local problem. Resource depletion, species extinction, pollution, climate change, and overconsumption are significantly and quickly destroying our environment however, no comprehensive solutions have been reached. Changes in such magnitude have been compared to changes in major geological eras such as the Jurassic period. Although we, collectively as a society, are responsible for this mass destruction we are still capable of turning this around. We are at a critical crossroads, where new boundaries can be formed between continuing with our course of destruction and “reconfiguring the relation of economy and ecology for a sustainable future” (7).
